The Sony Cybershot DSC-G3

The Sony Cybershot DSC-G3

The Sony Cybershot DSC-G3 is the world’s first Wi-Fi camera that allows photographers to log into virtually any photo sharing service on the Web to upload their images directly to their social network of choice.

The DSC-G3 is a wireless camera with a G3 Wi-Fi connection which is operated from the 3.5-inch touch screen LCD display on the camera’s back. The browser’s home page is Sony’s imaging portal. It presents you with five options for services to connect with: YouTube, Dailymotion, Photobucket, Picasa and Shutterfly. You are also able to connect to the Internet directly in order to upload photos to other popular sites like Facebook and Flickr.

The camera itself is compact and powerful. The DSC-G3 weighs 6.8 ounces, and is a bit wide at 4.1 inches by 2.5 inches by 0.8 inch deep. And it increases to a full 4.9 inches wide when the camera is open and on. However, it fits easily in a loose-fitting pants pocket for transport when off. Best of all, the Wi-Fi does not slow down the camera’s response time. In fact, it can wake up and shoot in just 2.2 seconds, rare for its class, and even rarer given the memory-heavy Wi-Fi demands. Surprisingly, the DSC-G3 can also shoot more than 50 frames at 1.6fps in burst mode.

The camera’s specs are pretty typical and comparable to other cameras of its class (a compact with a 10-megapixel sensor and 4x zoom lens or better). But specs should not be what users are after with the DSC-G3. If you are a photo sharing buff in need of a solid camera and instant Web sharing gratification, then the Sony Cybershot DSC-G3 is definitely for you.
